CAUSES

POACHING
It is the illegal taking of animals to produce things like clothes and medicines. Poaching includes: take animals without a license/permit, use illegal traps or weapons…
Some animals are poached because people want to stop them from encroaching on farms, and poaching is also a sport for some people. Although poaching is now under control, it led to mass extinction of some species.
Animals are poached because some of their parts are used in medicines as a cure for everything from nightmares to dysentery.

DEFORESTATION
Deforestation can lead to a direct loss of wildlife habitat as well as a general degradation of habitats. The removal of trees and other types of vegetation reduces available food, shelter, and breeding habitat.
The most affected group of animals are those that are endemic to a specific area or ecosystem, which is directly or closely linked with the forest.
This represents animals that are adapted only to their specific habitat.
A lot of animal species are unable to move or adapt to a new region and for this deforestation will cause their extinction.

GLOBAL WARMING
Global warming is the main cause of the extinction of animals that live in cold habitats. For example with the increase of the temperature, the glaciers are melting and the loss of that habitat leads to the death of the animals in those areas.

ANIMALS LIST

ELEPHANTS

African elephants live in Sub-Saharan forests and savanas, while the asian ones live in southern Asia. They are characterized by large ivory tusks heavily collected by the poachersfor marketing on the black market.
It is estimated that around 20 000 elephants lose their lives every year because of these people.
Today, in this hunt, technological tools are used to increase the amount of ivory for the black market. With reference to this, between 2006 and 2015, 110,000 african elephants were killed to favor the market.

ORANGUTANS

The orangutans live in the Borneo and Sumatra forest, respectively 90% in the first and 10% in the second.
These species spend their days moving from tree to tree where they will give shelters for the night among the branches.
Today this species lives in small mountain areas, not suitable to its survival.

POLAR BEARS

Polar bears spend the most of their time on the polar pack ice but they also swim.
It is estimated that we are between 22000 and 31000 specimens destribuited from the north pole to Alaska, Russia, Svolbard isla, Greenland and Canada.
At present, however, the number of this species has been decreasing because of the climate change.

SOLUTIONS

  1. Educate your family about endangered species in your area
  2. Recycle and buy sustainable products
  3. Grow native plants
  4. Reduce your water consumption
  5. Reduce your personal footprint
  6. Do not buy plastic products
  7. Volunteer your time to protect the wildlife in your area
  8. Do not purchase products from companies that are known polluters
  9. Black out the Black Market
  10. Herbicides and pesticides are hazardous pollutants that affect wildlife at many levels
